Part 2 – Problem Solving

An English writer who wrote many novels short stories. Wells is best remembered for his science fiction novels which include The Invisible Man, The War of The Worlds and his first novel ‘The Time Machine’. As a futurist he wrote a number of utopian works and foretold the advent of aircraft, tanks, space travel nuclear weapons, satellite television and something resembling the worldwide web! His extraordinary assumptions were given the name “Wells’s law”. In his early days, during school life, he was one of the founders of The Science School Journal, a magazine that allowed him to express his views on literature and society as well as having the opportunity to write some fiction; I guess this is where it all started…
One of the ways that Wells expressed himself was through his drawings and sketches. They covered a wide variety of topics from political commentary or his feelings towards literary contemporaries and his current romantic interests. During his second marriage he drew a number of pictures many of them being over comments about his second marriage these pictures were called “picshuas” and published in a book in 2006.

Mind Mapping for my designs:

My Book Cover Designs
My designs for 3 book covers which should compliment each other and link as a series. Similar use of bold colours and images I created myself in Adobe Illustrator.

Visualising Ideas
Postcard sized handouts to help promote interest in a community garden.
The intention is that the cards will be linked to fruit/veg that are in season and collectable with tips and facts or a cooking suggestion on the reverse.

Packaging Design Brief
I researched a range of food packaging ideas and concentrated on the more feminine appearance.
Brief: Create packaging for Quaker’s new ‘Chilled Creamy Oats’ product for young women
looking for a truly delicious healthy snack. The target audience is young women juggling
many jobs and priorities everyday. They like to eat well but also love treats and hate
feeling hungry
I designed a box and some foil packaging for a cereal company to help advertise their new chilled oats aimed at young women juggling many jobs each day.
The use of pastel shades of pink and purple appeals to the female consumer as mentioned in the brief.

The foil packaging means they can be kept chilled in the friedge. The pouch is easy tear and ready to eat ‘on the go’!
The Poster – too much or not enough information
Poster Design – Food Festival
I was given feedback on both designs; the left poster was perceived as too busy in detail and the right poster was simplified based on the comments I was given. I do feel the comments and feedback help me to change my design to make it more impactful in its message and layout.
Assignment 2 – Thinking of You
Greetings Cards
I focused on the design aspect rather than the folding of the card as many people these days order a card online and any form of personalisation is more popular either through a photo or individual’s name….

The Mother’s Day and Book Worm Card features a keep sake a baby pic that can be used as a fridge magnet or the cut off personalised book marker.
My final idea was to base my cards on the Chinese Zodiac, not something that you usually see in a card shop. Can be for a birthday or just a general thinking of you as the cards are year of birth realted rather than date of birth. The message states the characteristics of the particular animal sign.
